HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore Megan Bellingham netted her second goal of the season in the Syracuse women’s soccer team’s 4-1 setback against James Madison in the finale of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational on Sunday, August 31. Bellingham and junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances against William & Mary on Friday and the host Dukes.
All of the scoring took place in the first half. James Madison (1-1-1) took an early lead on Cate Tisinger’s goal just 1:23 into the match. Tisinger dribbled the ball from the right side of the field into the box and sent a shot from five yards out over Bennett-Hattan. The Orange (1-2-0) knotted the score in the 18th minute. Tessa MacDougall fired a shot that was stopped by JMU goalkeeper Diane Wszalek. The rebound went to Bellingham, who found the back of the net with a shot from three yards away. MacDougall was credited with an assist on the play.
James Madison took the lead for good 1:37 later on Jess Remmes’ goal. The Dukes added a pair of goals from Corky Julien in the 22nd minute and Ashley Flateland off a free kick in the 40th minute for the 4-1 final.
“We had opportunities to score and the game was much closer than the score reflects,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “It took us a while to get going. In the second half we were better and had more chances. It should have and could have been much closer.”
Syracuse held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, while the Dukes outshot the Orange, 18-13. Bennett-Hattan recorded six saves, and finished the tournament with seven stops. Wszalek and Missy Reimert combined for six saves for James Madison.
The Orange returns to the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday when it hosts Fordham at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Orange fans can watch the game live via Orange All-Access, the athletic department’s multimedia packaged hosted by suathletics.com.
