SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded her first shutout of the season and the 13th of her career as she played all 110 minutes in the Syracuse women’s soccer team’s 0-0 double-overtime draw against Fordham on Friday, Sept. 5 at the SU Soccer Stadium. With the tie the Orange (1-2-1) snaps its two-game losing streak and remains unbeaten at home.
Bennett-Hattan, who recorded two saves in the game, moved into sole possession of second place on the Orange’s all-time list for career shutouts with 13. She needs just one more shutout to tie Shannon Myers (2001-04) for the top spot on SU’s career leader ledger.
The opening 45 minutes of Friday’s action featured several chances for the visiting Rams (1-0-1) as they recorded four shots. The Orange picked up the offensive intensity in the second half and had the best scoring chance of the night when Sara Grimsgaard headed the ball toward the goal off a corner kick. Fordham goalkeeper Jen Byer deflected the ball over the crossbar to preserve the tie. She finished with five saves.
The extra sessions featured back and forth action as both squads registered one shot in the second overtime period.
The Orange held a 7-6 advantage in shots, while Fordham had five corners to three for the Orange.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday when it goes on the road to face Niagara at 4 p.m.
