SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fundamentals are the focus for the 2008 football Orange while the squad completes the mandatory 'shells' practices. Tomorrow the Orange will add shoulder pads to the 'shells' uniform that includes helmets, jerseys and shorts they have worked out in for the first two days of practice.
"We’re still not in pads – just kind of working to get the rust off. The effort has been good," said head coach Greg Robinson. "The thing we really need to focus on in these first few days before we really get going is just getting our stuff down and making sure we’re getting our installations in."
Robinson senses his upperclassmen are falling right back into place in a productive approach, but just as importantly, he is making sure his young guns are catching on at the pace they need to be.
"I really look for the younger players to see how much recall they have of what we had done in the spring and I’m pleased with it," Robinson said. "I think the older players are pretty comfortable with what we’ve been working on so far."
Conditioning has also been a focal point. The team opens practice with conditioning drills and then re-visits those sessions mid-way through practice.
"I’m not big on keeping them after to run after practice. I run them right at the start of practice and I run them right in the middle of practice for a period of time. It makes conditions a little bit more game-like and there are times you get fatigued in a game and you have to recover," Robinson said. "I think our recovery time is very good and we’ve come right back and worked well and I’m pleased with the team’s condition at this point."
The Orange will have two practices in the complete 'shells' uniform before the full pads and hitting commences on Friday.
