SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four members of the Syracuse women’s lacrosse team were among the 49 players chosen to represent the U.S. women’s national teams in 2008-09. Following a three-day tryout at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Orange senior Katie Rowan, juniors Christina Dove and Halley Quillinan and sophomore Liz Hogan are eligible for the final 18-player roster that will represent the United States at the 2009 IFWLA World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic.
The player pool will be divided into Elite and Developmental teams following US Lacrosse’s Stars and Stripes weekend Oct. 10-13. The final roster for the World Cup squad is expected to be announced following the US Lacrosse Champions Challenge in January 2009.
Rowan enters her senior season as the most prolific scorer in the history of the program. She is the Orange’s all-time leader in points (284), goals (178) and assists (106). In 2008, Rowan led the nation in scoring, setting the school’s single-season scoring record with 142 points, and tied the NCAA single-season mark with 69 assists. She earned first-team All-America honors for the second straight years and was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award and Honda Sports Award.
Dove received All-America honors for the first time in her career in 2008, earning a spot on the second team. She led the team in goals with a single-season school record 75. She also dished out a career-best 25 assists to join Rowan as the only players in school history to score 100 points in a season. Dove ranked fourth in the nation in scoring and ninth in both points (4.76) and goals per game (3.57).
Quillinan was a first-team All-America selection in 2008 after earning third-team accolades as a freshman. Last season Quillinan scored 77 points on 63 goals and 14 assists, all career highs. She also tallied single-season bests in ground balls (29), draw controls (53) and caused turnovers (28). Her 77 points rank fourth on Syracuse’s single-season record list, while her 63 goals are the third-highest single-season total in school history.
Hogan started all 21 games for the Orange as a freshman in 2008. Hogan earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors after leading the league with a 8.14 goals against average. She also earned a spot on the BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team after recording 18 saves in two games. Hogan reached double figures in saves in seven games, including SU’s first-round NCAA Championship game against Towson. Her 11 saves against the Tigers were the most for any goalkeeper in the first round of the 2008 tournament.
Syracuse is one of five schools to have four or more current or former players chosen for the national team pool.
