SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 win against the Huskies of Northeastern Friday night. Senior April Quigley had a season-high 34 assists in the Orange’s first match of the Big Orange Tournament.
Junior’s Sarah Morton and Kacie MacTavish led the offense with 10 kills apiece. Freshman Erin Little and sophomore Hayley Todd added nine kills each. Pacing the defense were Quigley, MacTavish and Morton. Quigley contributed 10 digs and five block assists, Morton registered five total blocks and MacTavish recorded 10 digs.
In set one, the Huskies took control from the get-go. Through the first part of the frame, the Huskies led by four points. While Syracuse was able to get within one point of the Huskies by the midpoint, the Huskies slowly gained momentum and won the set, 25-16.
Syracuse was not discouraged and was able to get on the board first in set two. The set remained close until about midway through when the Orange started to develop a substantial lead. The Huskies took two timeouts in an effort to break Syracuse’s momentum, but the Orange did not let up. They held the Huskies to 17 points as they won set two.
The Orange took an early lead in set three thanks to a service error by the Huskies and a kill by Todd. The Huskies, however, fought back and took a four-point lead early on. Four MacTavish kills, joined by kills from Little and Morton, allowed the Orange to tie the match, 13-13. Consecutive kills from sophomore Annabelle Pellerin gave the Orange a two-point lead. The Orange did not let up from there on out and closed the set, 25-19.
Set four started out as a back and forth affair before the Orange was able to begin developing a lead. The Huskies stayed within four points of Syracuse but were never able to tie the set and take the lead. The Orange capitalized on several Husky errors, grabbed an eight-point lead and won the fourth set, 25-17.
The Big Orange Tournament continues on Saturday with action beginning at 9:30 a.m. between Northeastern and Army. The Orange is back in action Saturday at noon, facing the Siena Saints.
