Schraden Ignites Second-Half Orange Rally as No. 7 SU Defeats Delaware, 5-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore forward Shelby Schraden scored two goals in the second half for the seventh-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team in a 5-1 victory against Delaware today at the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland. The Orange is 6-0 for only the third time in its 37-year history. The 1981 and 1997 team also started 6-0. No team has ever gone 7-0.
Delaware’s Tori Karsten scored the only goal in the first half off a scramble in front of the cage after a Fightin’ Blue Hens’ penalty corner.
Schraden tied the score at 38:27, deflecting a hit by freshman back Anne-Sophie Van der Post. Schraden scored the game-winning goal at 51:46, knocking the ball off the glove of Delaware’s goalkeeper. The sophomore now as five goals on the season. It was Van der Post’s first career assist.
Van der Post converted a SU penalty corner for an insurance goal at 56:56. It was her first career goal. Sophomore back Maggie Befort and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica provided the push and stop, respectively.
Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad added another Orange goal off a breakaway at 58:01. The sophomore is now tied with a team-best six goals.
Befort converted another Syracuse penalty corner for the game’s final goal at 60:29. It was Befort’s third goal of the season. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor was credited with the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess made three saves in the win. Nikki Rhoades made 10 saves for Delaware.
The seventh-ranked Syracuse Orange opens BIG EAST play at home against No. 13 Louisville on Friday at 2 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Orange All Access will provide live video and audio and live stats will be available on SUathletics.com.
