SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The third-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team hit another historical milestone today, improving to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference with a 3-0 victory versus No. 11 Louisville at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange is 7-0 for the first time in its 37-year history. The Cardinals’ record moves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the league.
“Honestly, I can’t even think about being 7-0. Wow,” said head coach Ange Bradley. “When you put the big picture together and sit back, it’s unbelievable. We are so focused on what’s next that it’s really hard to think about what just happened. You don’t think about those things until the end of your season.”
Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to put SU up, 1-0, just 3:24 into the game. The goal was setup by a Syracuse corner with sophomore back Maggie Befort providing the push and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica the stop.
The teams remained scoreless the rest of the half, with the Orange outshooting the Cardinals, 9-5. SU also had the edgein penalty corners at half, 5-1.
Syracuse jumped all over Louisville in the second half, scoring twice in a three minute span to put the game out of reach.
Freshman back Anne-Sophie Van de Post scored her second career goal to put SU ahead, 2-0, at 43:42. That goal was also setup by a Syracuse corner with Befort and Loncarica providing the push and stop.
Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad scored her team-best seventh goal the year at 46:30 to put the Orange up, 3-0. Loncarica also provided the assist on that goal. Loncarica’s three assists tie a school record and she is only the second player to accomplish the feat twice.
Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess only needed to make one save in her second shutout performance of the year. SU outshot UofL, 16-8, and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The third-ranked Orange remains home to play New Hampshire on Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
