A goal in the 62nd minute by sophomore back Maggie Befort and a brilliant save by senior goalkeeper Heather Hess in the final seconds cemented No. 7 Syracuse field hockey’s 2-1 victory at No. 1 Maryland yesterday. It was the first lost for Maryland in the Terrapin Invitational in the 12-year history of the event.
Syracuse is 3-1 all-time against Delaware. The Orange won the first three meetings, but lost the most recent meeting in 2006. SU has outscored the Fightin’ Blue Hens, 11-6 in the four contests.
Delaware (0-4) went 0-2 last week, suffering a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Ohio State last Saturday and a 1-0 setback to No. 14 Boston University on Sunday. The setbacks dropped the Blue Hens to 0-4 for the first time in school history. Goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades stood out for the Blue Hens, posting 11 saves against Ohio State and two versus BU. It was the fifth time in her career and second this season that she reached double figures in saves. Delaware’s lone goal came from Alexis Esbitt, who scored in the first half of the Ohio State game, putting Delaware on top for the next 20 minutes. • Rhoades is first in the CAA in saves (36) and saves percentage (.821). Florence Sijbrandij, Esbitt and Rachel Schexnayder have each tallied a team-best one goal.
A native of Drexel Hill, Pa., Bradley earned a degree in physical education and was a four-year field hockey and lacrosse letterwinner at the University of Delaware. A goalkeeper for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, she holds school records in career shutouts (26) and career goals-against average (0.91), and ranks second in career saves with 477. Her collegiate accomplishments earned her entrance into the Blue Hen Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
