SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team swept the Colgate Invitational today with wins against Princeton (3-0) and Colgate (3-1). Sophomore Hayley Todd had a career match against Colgate posting career-highs in kills (11), attacks (24) and block assists (8).
“I thought we came out really strong against Princeton,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “We were able to shut down their stride and block them throughout the match.”
In the three set match with Princeton, junior Sarah Morton led the Orange with 14 kills and was second on the team with a .524 attack percentage. Todd was second on the team with 10 kills but led the team with a .571 attack percentage. Senior April Quigley recorded 32 assists in the match, while freshman Noemie Lefebvre registered 14 digs.
The Orange dominated all three sets against the Tigers. In set one, the Orange scored first and maintained a slight lead throughout the set. The Tigers tied it up, 15-15, but it wasn’t enough to slow the Orange who went on to win the set, 25-17.
The Tigers to a 2-0 lead to start off set two but the Orange was not discouraged. It was a back and forth affair until the Orange tied it up, 15-15. From there, it was all Syracuse. Orange kills and several Tiger errors, gave the Orange a win in set two, 25-19.
Princeton would take a 3-0 lead in set three before Lefebvre posted a kill to get the Orange on the board. Syracuse forced the Tigers to make several errors and was able to take the lead. A Tiger timeout did not prove effective in slowing the Orange momentum. The Tigers kept the match close, however, until the final part of the frame when the Orange managed to hold Princeton and take the lead to win, 25-19.
Syracuse faced the Colgate Raiders at 5 p.m. and despite losing set three, was able to come back in set four to secure a 3-1 win. Morton again led the Orange in kills with 12. In addition to Todd’s 11 kills, junior Kacie MacTavish added nine and also record eight total blocks. Quigley once again paced the offense with 35 assists and senior Marissa Kanemura had a team high 11 digs.
In its match with the Raiders, Syracuse won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21. The Raiders picked up their blocking in set three and stalled the Orange giving Colgate a 25-12 win. Syracuse was not to be denied its second win of the night and managed to seal the 25-22 win with a kill from MacTavish.
“It says a lot about us to drop the third set and still come back to win the match,” LaMarche said. “Hopefully we learned something from last week and can carry the momentum into our match on Wednesday with Cornell and further into the BIG EAST portion of our schedule.”
The Orange are back on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Cornell to take on the Big Red. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
