Five Syracuse University athletic teams were in action this past week. The No. 7 Orange field hockey team earned a 2-1 win against No. 1 Maryland on Saturday. The team capped off its weekend with a 5-1 victory against Delaware. The men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against Monmouth on Thursday. After a 3-2 victory against Binghamton on Tuesday, the volleyball team hosted four teams in the Big Orange Tournament followed by a match against Akron Sunday afternoon. The women’s soccer team posted a 2-0 victory against Colgate on Sunday. The Cross Country teams claimed the top spots at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Saturday for the second-consecutive weekend.
The No. 7 field hockey team earned a 2-1 win against No. 1 Maryland at the Terrapin Invitational. Freshman Martina Loncarica and sophomore Maggie Befort scored the two goals for the Orange. Versus Delaware, sophomore Shelby Schraden scored two of SU’s five goals. Freshman Anne-Sophie Van Der Post and sophomores Lindsey Conrad and Befort contributed the other three goals in the Orange’s 5-1 win against Delaware. The Orange are off to a 6-0 start to the season for only the third time in the program’s 37-year history.

With a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Monmouth, the Orange men’s soccer team extended its non-conference unbeaten streak to 19 games. For the fourth time in five games, the Orange did not allow a goal. Senior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia made five saves in the shutout. He is now tied for fifth place on SU’s all-time shutout list with 18. Junior Hansen Woodruff and senior Spencer Schomaker led the Orange offense with six and five shots, respectively.

Volleyball started its week out with a 3-2 win against nearby Binghamton in its first home match of the season. Junior Sarah Morton led the Orange in the come-from-behind victory with 19 kills, eight total blocks and a career-high five digs. The Orange played Northeastern in its opening match of the Big Orange Tournament. After losing the first set, the Orange came back to win the next three in a 3-1 win against the Huskies. Despite going 0-4 in the next four matches, several Orange players made their mark in each match. Senior Marissa Kanemura tallied a team-high 10 digs against the Siena Saints, Morton posted 11 kills and eight total blocks against the Ohio Bobcats, freshman Noemie Lefebvre was second on the team with six kills versus Army and freshman Hallie Morse led the Orange offense against the Akron Zips with 32 assists.

In the women’s soccer match against Colgate, junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded four saves and her second shutout of the season in the 2-0 win. Bennett-Hattan is now tied for first place in career-shutouts with 14 and is second in career saves with 196. SU’s two goals came from junior Tessa MacDougall and sophomore Megan Bellingham. MacDougall’s goal was her first of the season, while Bellingham’s was her fifth.

For the second straight week, the men’s and women’s cross country teams have swept the top spots in their respective races at Penn State’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. Junior Dan Busby led the Orange men with a time of 25:58 in the 5.2 mile course. The women were led by junior Maegan Krifchin who placed second in the 6k with a time of 21:39.
