SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange field hockey team rose to No. 3 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll after defeating No. 1 Maryland 2-1 at the Terrapin Invitational on Sept. 13. The Orange also received three first-place votes.
Syracuse defeated Maryland at the Terrapin Invitational where the Terps lost for the first time in the 12-year history of the event. Syracuse is 6-0 for only the third time in its 37-year history. The 1981 and 1997 teams also started 6-0, while no team has ever gone 7-0. Sophomore back Maggie Befort was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her role in spearheading a Syracuse defense that allowed only two goals in wins at Maryland and against Delaware on Sept. 14. Last week, Syracuse jumped up 11 places to No. 7, which was two spots higher than the program’s previous best of ninth, which it achieved in 1990 and 1993. SU made the largest jump up the poll out of any team after the first week of regular season play.
The Orange opens BIG EAST play at home against No. 13 Louisville on Friday at 2 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Orange All Access will provide live video and audio and live stats will be available on SUathletics.com.
