SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 18th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team rewrote the Orange record book in SU’s 12-0 victory versus Colgate in Syracuse’s 2008 home debut on Tuesday, September 2 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. SU’s 12 goals eclipsed a 23-year old mark and senior midfielder Shannon Taylor set the mark for points in a game and tied the record for goals in a contest.
“We played pretty good tonight. It’s hard to score 12 goals in any game and we set some records tonight, which is always excellent,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “Scoring five goals against Old Dominion is also a very difficult thing. People have really worked hard to learn the roles and they understand what we are trying to accomplish. So far they are doing a great job.”
The Orange scored its school-record 11th and 12th goals in the game’s final eight minutes, breaking the old standard of 10 set in a 10-1 win against Rider in 1985.
Taylor had four of Syracuse’s first 10 goals to tie Kristin Aronowicz’ and Joanne Lombard’s mark of four goals in a game. Aronowicz scored her four goals in a 5-1 victory versus Colgate in 2000 and Lombard accomplished the feat in a 6-0 win against Albany in 2004.
The Midlothian, Va. native added an assist on SU’s seventh goal of the evening, giving her a school-record nine points.
“Shannon is great. She holds spaces well, is a great distributor and she has the gift to finish,” Bradley said. “It is awesome to have her back on the field competing for us and making a difference for Syracuse hockey.”
Freshman midfielder Marina Vernet scored the first three goals of her career, including the record setting 11th and 12th of the game.
Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad recorded three assists and freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica chipped in with two goals and two assists of her own.
Sophomore midfielder Lena Voelmle and freshmen Nicole Nelson and Heather Husek all tallied their first career goals to round-out the scoring for the Orange.
Sophomore defender Kim Coyle registered the first assist of her career.
Senior Heather Hess and sophomore Christina Puggi each played a half in Syracuse’s second consecutive shutout.
The Orange went ahead 2-0 in the game’s first seven minutes, 4-0, in the first 17 minutes and led 6-0 by halftime. For the second consecutive time, the SU defense did not allow a shot in the first half. Syracuse extended its lead to eight 10 minutes into the second half and 10-0 with ten minutes left on the clock. The Orange added two more goals in the game’s final eight minutes.
The Raiders had two shots in the second half. Syracuse’s defense has limited its first two opponents to four shots, one on goal, in its first two games.
The Orange heads to Michigan for two games at Central Michigan on Friday, September 5 at 3 p.m. at No. 10 Michigan State on Sunday, September 7 at noon.
