MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The 18th-ranked Syracuse Orange used a hat-trick from Shelby Schraden and two early goals from sophomore forward Kristin Girouard and senior midfielder Shannon Taylor to secure its third consecutive win, 8-3, at Central Michigan this afternoon. SU improves to 3-0 on the young season, while the Chippewas move to 0-1.
“Central Michigan played hard. They were a good opponent for us and they challenged us in a lot of ways,” head coach Ange Bradley said. "We were able to persevere. The team overcame a difficult situation and that is very good for us.”
Girouard tipped in a Schraden pass from three yards out to give Syracuse the early, 1-0, lead just 1:31 into the game. Taylor then capitalized on an Orange corner at the 4:07 mark to put SU up, 2-0.
The Chippewas fought back to tie it when they scored two goals in a span of 1:27. Brook Sihota scored to get CMU on the board and Moyra Betuzzi responded to tie the contest up at the 11:46 mark.
Syracuse scored twice more before halftime to take a 4-2 lead at the break. Schraden scored her first goal of the afternoon after tipping in a pass from freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica and Taylor converted on another Orange corner.
Schraden took advantage of a Girouard pass early in the second half for her second goal. It gave SU a 5-2 advantage at 39:02.
Pam Seufert scored off a rebound from a Kim Erasums shot with 12:30 remaining to bring the Chippewas back to within two, 5-3, but that was as close as Central would get in the second frame.
Syracuse would score three unanswered goals to cap the scoring and produce the final margin. Senior back Heather Doran recorded her first career goal. Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad tallied her fourth of the year and Schraden completed the hat-trick.
Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess got the start between the pipes, giving up three goals on 21 shots, making 10 saves. Loncarica became the 13th Syracuse player to record three assists in a game.
The Orange remains in Michigan for a contest at No. 10 Michigan State on Sunday, September 7 at noon.
