SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse women’s soccer team scored the only goal it would need 49 seconds into the contest in its 2-0 win against Binghamton at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 21. The win improves the Orange’s record to 3-3-2, including a 3-0-2 mark at home. Binghamton goes to 4-2-1.
“The players have really come and out and started to work for each other and do things for each other,” said head coach Phil Wheddon. “It’s not about playing for a coach or anything like that. They are working hard for each other. We’ve had a good weekend. We’re going in against Pittsburgh on Thursday on a high. Our team is playing very well. That’s all I can ask for.”
Sophomore Megan Bellingham scored Syracuse’s first goal off a corner kick. Amanda Arcuri took the corner kick, getting the ball into the box to Sara Grimsgaard. Grimsgaard took the ball in the air and headed a shot that was saved by Binghamton goalkeeper Jen McEachron. The ball ricocheted to Bellingham, who found the back after just 49 seconds had run off the clock. It marked the second time this season the Orange has scored in the first minute of a game. For Bellingham, it was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Syracuse extended its lead in the second half when senior Karrah Benson took a free kick and found junior Tessa MacDougall at the left corner of the goal. MacDougall put her shot past McEachron at the 65:20 mark for the 2-0 final.
The Orange had 17 shots while Binghamton had just one. SU also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Syracuse goalkeepers Eliza Bennett-Hattan and Sami Hirsh combined for the shutout, the Orange’s third straight and fourth of the season. McEachron finished with 10 saves for the Bearcats.
Syracuse returns to conference play on Thursday when it hosts Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission to the game is free of charge.
