SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 29, 2008.
The men's soccer team just wrapped up a thrilling weekend of soccer, splitting its two decisions. On Friday night, Arena helped knock off #20/22 Providence by a 3-0 decision. Arena benefited from sophomore Geoff Lytle's (Miami Beach, Fla.) pass at the 67:08 mark to put the Orange ahead 2-0. Arena and Lytle lead the Orange with three assists apiece.
On Sunday afternoon, the Orange played #2/5 Connecticut to a tough 1-0 loss in front of 1,114 Syracuse fans. SU's ninth contest of 2008 was the third-largest gathering for a men’s match in the history of the SU Soccer Stadium, and the second home crowd of more than a 1,000 fans to watch the Orange this year.
Arena's goal on Sunday was his first career tally for the Orange. He has five career points for Syracuse throughout his career (one goal, four assists). Arena is majoring in television, radio and film.
Syracuse begins divisional play later this week. The Orange will travel to Tampa, Fla. to face Red Division leader #9 USF on Friday, Oct. 3. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
