In the final full week of September, four Syracuse teams were in action. The No. 2 field hockey team remains undefeated for the season after posting wins against Providence and Massachusetts. The men’s soccer team posted a 3-0 victory against No. 20/22 Providence, marking the second-consecutive season the team has defeated a nationally ranked opponent. Orange volleyball is on a four-game win streak after posting wins against Cornell and Rutgers. A 1-0 win against Pitt allowed the women’s soccer team to remain undefeated at home this season and was its four-straight shutout this fall.
The No. 2 field hockey team moved to 10-0 for the season after it recorded its second conference win against Providence and a victory against Massachusetts. The Orange faced Providence on Friday where it outshot the Friars 11-2 in the first 35 minutes of play. Four different players notched the goals for the Orange, including freshman Anne-Sophie Van Der Post, senior Shannon Taylor, sophomore Lindsey Conrad and sophomore Shelby Schraden. Syracuse’s 5-4 win against the Massachusetts Minutewomen was only the second time this season the Orange has played a one-goal game. Five different players recorded goals, with Taylor tallying her second of the weekend.

For the second-consecutive season, the men’s soccer team defeated a team ranked in the national polls when it recorded a 3-0 victory against No. 20/22 Providence. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak to the Friars. Senior Kyle Hall, freshman Nick Olivetti and sophomore Justin Arena accounted for the Orange’s three goals. Despite falling to UConn 1-0 in a double overtime match on Sunday, the Orange matched the Huskies shot-for shot throughout the game and outshot them, 7-4, in the second half. Hall led Syracuse with six shots and senior goalie Robert Cavicchia made six saves.

The Orange volleyball team is now on a four-game win streak after recording wins this past week against Cornell and BIG EAST opponent Rutgers. While Cornell and Rutgers both recorded more kills than Syracuse, the Orange’s ability to limit errors enabled them to secure the wins. Cornell had 45 kills to Syracuse’s 38, but the Big Red had 25 errors and the Orange only had eight. Leading the Orange offensively were junior Kacie MacTavish, sophomore Hayley Todd and freshman Erin Little who each tallied eight kills. Little also tallied seven block assists. In the BIG EAST opener versus Rutgers, the Orange registered 46 kills to Rutgers 52, but the Orange only had five errors, while the Scarlet Knights had 19. Junior Sarah Morton led the team with 11 kills and a.455 attack percentage.

The women’s soccer team recorded its fourth-straight shutout and its first BIG EAST win of the season on Thursday, September 25 when it earned a 1-0 win against Pittsburgh. Freshman Taylor Chamberlain scored SU’s goal. Junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hatton recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career. Syracuse traveled to No. 11/13 West Virginia on Sunday to take on the Mountaineers. The Orange recorded five shots and three corner kicks in the 8-0 loss to WVU. Overall, the Orange is 4-4-2 and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST. The team remains undefeated at home.

Cross Country has had the past two weeks off from competition, but the team has been preparing for the four meets scheduled for October. Up first for the team is a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Paul Short Invitational on October 3. Following the meet, the team will travel to State College, Pa. to take part in the National Open on October 17.
