Red Hot Orange Travels to Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The 18-ranked Orange (2-0) travels to the Wolverine State for two contests at Central Michigan (0-0) on Friday, September 5 at 3 p.m. and at No. 10 Michigan State (3-0) on Sunday, September 7 at noon.
Syracuse rewrote the Orange record book in its last outing, a 12-0 victory versus Colgate in SU’s 2008 home debut on Tuesday, September 2 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. SU’s 12 goals eclipsed a 23-year old mark and senior midfielder Shannon Taylor set the mark for points in a game and tied the record for goals in a contest. The Orange has outscored its opponents, 17-0, in its two games and outshot its foes, 65-4. SU also has more penalty corners, 20-3, and penalty strokes, 3-0.
The Orange is 4-1 all-time against Central Michigan. The Orange won the first three meetings, but lost in Mount Pleasant, Mich., 2-1, in 2006, SU’s only trip to CMU. The Orange redeemed itself last season, with a 4-3 victory at home.
Central Michigan’s game with Syracuse is the Chippewas 2008 season opene . Central Michigan is predicted to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas return 10 of 11 starters and 11 of 12 letterwinners from the 2007 squad that finished 6-14 overall and 4-6 in league play. Head coach Cristy Freese returns for her 23rd season at the helm of the Chippewas’ program. Freese has amassed a 175-240-6 record in her time at CMU. Samantha Sandham (20 pts, 5g, 10a) returns as CMU’s leading scorer. Kelly Jordan (6g) and Moyra Betuzzi (6g) are both back after leading the Chippewas in goals last season.
SU is 3-2 all-time against Michigan State. The Orange won the first three meetings, but has lost the last two. SU is 1-1 all-time in East Lansing, Mich.
The 10th-ranked Michigan State field hockey team remained undefeated with a 3-2 overtime win against Stanford on Wednesday, September 3. Junior Jeamie Deacon recorded the game-winning goal 3:23 into extra time. MSU is now 3-0 overall for just the eighth time in 27 seasons. Gwen Riley leads the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points. She also ranks first in the Big Ten in goals, points and assists. Geraldine Raynor is second on the team in scoring with six points on three goals. Elissa Unger ranks third in the Big Ten with a 1.64 goals against average and is fourth with a .583 save percentage.
