BIG EAST Battle with the Pirates on Tap for Tuesday Night at the Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's basketball team (13-3, 2-1) looks to keep its momentum in full swing when the Orange hosts BIG EAST challenger Seton Hall (12-3, 1-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7pm at the Carrier Dome. The game can be heard seen live on SUAthletics.com via Orange All Access. It can also be heard live on WTLA AM 1200, SUAthletics.com via Orange All Access and WJPZ FM 89. Syracuse’s current 13-3 mark equals its second-best start in program history. The Orange was 14-2 in 2007-08. This season’s mark of 13 wins in 16 games matches the 1980-81 and 1978-79 seasons. Syracuse is on its best two-year run ever, registering a 27-5 record when combining the first 16 games of both seasons.
In addition to its impressive start, the Orange is 8-0 at home this season (7-0 in the Carrier Dome and 1-0 in Manley Field House). Syracuse has won 21 of its last 23 home games, including 19 of its last 21 played in the Dome. SU has won its last 11 home games.
Syracuse received seven votes in the latest Associated Press Preseason poll, putting the Orange at No. 33. SU garnered 20 votes in the Associated Press Preseason poll, marking the first time in the program’s history that it garnered votes in the preseason poll. The 20 votes put the Orange in 33rd.
Peek at the Pirates
Seton Hall ventures to Salt City with a 1-2 record in BIG EAST play. The Pirates were faced with a stern opening to conference action with two games against nationally ranked opponents, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 10 Louisville. SHU lost both contests but bounced back with a 65-55 victory at home against Marquette. In non-conference battle, the Pirates assembled an 11-1 record with their sole loss coming by two points at San Diego, 74-72.
Senior forward Noteisha Womack represents the Pirates leading scorer and rebounder, averaging a double-double with 15.2 points and 13.9 rebounds per game. Womack is Seton Hall's most accurate assassin from the field, converting 54.2 percent (78-144) of her attempts. Sophomore guard Ebony Williams is second in scoring average with 14.7 points per game.
Defensively, senior guard Jadis Rhodin leads the team with 2.1 steals per game while junior forward Nicole Emory has posted a team-best 1.3 blocks per contest.
Seton Hall has outscored its opponents by a margin of 14.9 points and has outrebounded its foes 12.9 more times.
Tuesday's matchup with be the 47th time these two teams have met. The Pirates hold a 27-19 advantage in the series, but Syracuse edged SHU, 81-72, at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. last year. A Syracuse victory would pull the Orange to an even 10-10 record against Seton Hall at home.
Big Boost from the Bench
Junior forward Juanita Ward led the Orange with 18 points in SU’s 71-70 victory at Cincinnati on Jan. 10. She was 7-of-11 (.636) from the field, including 1-of-1 (1.000) from behind the 3-point line, and 3-of-3 (1.000) from the free-throw line. Ward added three assists in her 24 minutes of action.
The third-year player has come off the bench to provide valuable minutes for the Orange. Ward is averaging 10.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. The Bolton, Miss. native has recorded 10 double-figure games and two 20-point contests. She has four double-figure rebounding performances and has led SU in rebounding four times, scoring and blocks on three occasions, steals twice and assists once.
Last Time Out
At Cincinnati, junior forward Nicole Michael accounted for 16 points and six rebounds while senior guard Chandrea Jones scored 12 points with four rebounds. Sophomore guard Erica Morrow had her eight-game streak of scoring 15+ points snapped, but put forth a great defensive effort with four steals and a career-best two blocks, including a timely stop on UC’s end in the final moments of the contest. Morrow added seven points.
Junior forward Vionca Murray total 10 points and three rebounds while freshman guard Tyler Ash knocked down six points, including her second-career 3-pointer, and picked up five boards. Sophomore guard Tasha Harris ran the point efficiently by handing out six assists
