Next Up…Niagara
Syracuse has played every team in the CHA this season except Niagara University. SU has already closed out its four-game set with Mercyhurst and Robert Morris and now switches its focus onto the Purple Eagles. Niagara has assembled a 4-16-2 record with a 1-3 mark in CHA play. The Purple Eagles defeated Robert Morris for their solo league victory and took out Clarkson, Brown and Cornell in non-league action. NU is led by senior forward Ashely Riggs who is sixth in the league with 22 overall points. Riggs is fifth in the league with 10 goals and tied for fourth with 12 helpers. Niagara’s sophomore goaltender, Jenni Bauer, has constructed a 4-11-2 record with a 3.80 goals against average. Bauer has stopped 89.2 percent of the shots she’s faced in 994:26 minutes of play.
Malcolm the Magnificent
Freshman winger Janelle Malcolm arrived at her third two-point game of the season after knocking home a goal from her knees as well as chipping in with an assist this weekend. Malcolm’s goal also counted as her first career powerplay marker this season. Malcolm is second on the team with six goals and has totaled an SU fifth-best eight points on the season. She is currently tied for 16th in the CHA with 0.35 goals per game, 86th nationally. The Edmonton, Alberta native has a keen sense of the back of the net, too. Malcolm is tied for third in the conference with a 25.0 shot percent (6-of-24). Malcolm became the first player in Syracuse history to record two goals in one game when she accomplished the feat in the first game of the season at Colgate.
Schoedel Stops at 470
Junior netminder Lucy Schoedel put forth a strong showing in net against Robert Morris this past weekend. The Ithaca, N.Y. native stopped 45 total shots, extending her season total to 470. Schoedel also lowered her goals against average this weekend to 3.82. The third-year goalie leads the league with two shutouts in 942 minutes of play. She has turned away 88.7 percent of the shots she’s faced (470-of-530).
Even Stevens
The Syracuse ice hockey team reached another program first on January 10. The Orange took on Robert Morris for the fourth and final meeting of the regular season and skated to a 2-2 overtime draw. It was the first overtime tie in Syracuse history. SU’s tie is attributable to its first point in the CHA column. When SU squares off with Niagara, the two-game series will be a pivotal one as Niagara has only accrued two points this season in league play.
Offending the Defense
The Syracuse defense took on an offensive role this weekend. Junior blueliner Gabrielle Beaudry chalked up her first two career points for the Orange with an assist in each game. Beaudry’s back-to-back assist productivity yielded her first pointstreak of the season. Freshman defenseman Kelly Dimmen took part in her first pointstreak of the season, as well, by putting away Syracuse’s lone goal on Friday night coupled with her second assist of the season on Saturday. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native is SU’s second most productive point producer from the blue line. Dimmen has tallied four points on the season and is 29th in the CHA with an 11.8 shot percentage.
Making the Most of the Extra Man
Sophomore Cheyenne Bojeski and Malcolm have played an integral part in SU’s offense this season as the fruits of their labor came through on Saturday. Bojeski and Malcolm each scored their first powerplay goals on the season against Robert Morris in the 2-2 tie. Bojeski has totaled three goals and two assists on the season and is tied for 26th in the conference with a 12.0 shot percentage. Bojeski’s powerplay tally also denoted her first point in CHA play.
Lisa the Lender
Freshman forward Lisa Mullan continues to visualize the entire sheet on offense. Mullan dished out her team-leading 10th assist on Saturday. She is tied for 11th in the CHA with 0.59 assists per game and 58th in the entire country in that same category.
Tilford WAS Batting 1.000 …
Senior defenseman Rachel Tilford is one of the Orange’s blue-collar workers in the defensive zone, but Tilford did find the back of the net for her first and only shot in the home opener against Sacred Heart on Halloween. The Birch Hills, Saskatchewan native was also a Syracuse standout on the softball team the past three yeras, so she knows a thing or two about percentages. Tilford tried two more shots this weekend against Robert Morris which brought her shot percentage average down from 100 percent to 33.3 percent. She is still tied for the league-lead in shot accuracy.
Skelly Still Up There with the Best
Despite being shutout in the points category this past weekend, freshman winger Megan Skelly is still ranked with the nation’s elite. Skelly is the 15th most efficient first-year point scorer with 0.82 points per game. Skelly’s 0.53 goals per game tabs her as the 40th highest goal scorer in the nation and tied for ninth in the CHA. In overall points, she is 82nd in the country and tied for 14th with her 0.82 mark.
