NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team (3-13-2) skated to its second consecutive draw on Saturday afternoon when the Orange and first-time conference foe Niagara (4-16-3) capped off a 1-1 65 minute affair at Dwyer Arena. Syracuse held the Purple Eagles to only 12 total shots which is the lowest shot total the Orange defense has allowed this season. The tie locked up Syracuse's second point in the CHA standings.
Saturday's game was ridden with penalties as the Orange was sent to the box 13 times while Niagara was whistled on 15 occasions.
Freshman forward Lisa Mullan (Victoria, British Columbia) put away her second career powerplay tally, third of her career, to supply SU with its lone goal. Mullan, the Orange's assist leader with 10 helpers on the year, was aided by sophomores Stefanie Marty (Nussbaumen, Switzerland) and Rebecca Gordon (St. Catharines, Ontario) in the extra-man situation. For Marty, the assist was her eighth career while Gordon chalked up her fourth on the season.
Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) stopped 11-of-12 shots in the overtime affair, upping her career total to 481. Schoedel's goals against average dropped 3.63 after surrendering just one goal. The third-year local product has compiled a .887 save percentage in 1,007 minutes this season.
Niagara outshot the Orange, 4-2, in the opening frame, but Mullan's powerplay blast busted up the defensive stronghold at 5:01 of the second period. The first-year winger took advantage of a Lead Whittaker tripping call at 3:26 and beat NU netminder Jenni Bauer for the early 1-0 edge.
Jennifer MacLean's marker at 10:31 of the third period pulled the Purple Eagles even with Syracuse, 1-1. MacLean was assisted by Caitlin Jenkins on the game-tying tally.
In the overtime session, SU put together three scoring chances while Niagara only registered one shot on net, but neither team could break through for the victory.
Syracuse and Niagara faceoff again on Sunday at 2 pm. Sunday's skirmish will be the Orange's first regular season tilt to take place on a Sunday.
