SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse freshman winger Megan Skelly (Taber, Alberta) was named the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week on Monday, January 26. Skelly's award marks the third time she has been pegged as Rookie of the Week this season.
In this past weekend's bout with Wayne State, Skelly delivered a nifty one-timer at the start of the second period on Saturday afternoon as the Orange was down a skater on man-down defense. The first-year scoring threat also recorded her seventh assist in Friday's tilt, factoring in two of the three goals Syracuse put on the board this weekend.
Skelly now leads the club in points (16), goals (9) and short-handed goals (2). Skelly's short-handed goal on Saturday was SU's first short-handed goal since the Orange put away three against Sacred Heart in the home opener. Sophomore captains Julie Rising (Anchorage, Alaska) and Stefanie Marty (Nussbaumen, Switzerland) each accounted a goal while down a skater as did Skelly.
The CHA recognized Skelly as Rookie of the Week on November 3 and October 13. For the week of November 3, the Alberta-native tallied her first career short-handed goal against Sacred Heart in a 10-0 shutout. On the backend of the SHU series, she scored Syracuse's first two goals, including a powerplay marker to start off 7-3 victory against the Pioneers. She also added one assist to close out the four-point weekend.
On October 13, she claimed SU's first conference recognition after she chalked up two points in a 3-2 setback against Robert Morris, including Syracuse's first powerplay goal in program history.
Syracuse picks up where it left off against Niagara on Friday, January 30 at Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7pm.The two teams will collide again on Saturday, January 31 at 2pm, marking the final regular season conference game to be played at Tennity Ice Pavilion and the last event to be staged on a Saturday afternoon.
