SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After making its fifth appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in 2008, Syracuse softball was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll. Syracuse was 21-32 overall last season, going 12-10 in conference place.
Top returners for SU include seniors Amy Kelley and Jamie Kelling who were both named to the All-BIG EAST second team after last season. Kelley started every game in 2008 and owned a .346 batting average. Highlights from last season include, becoming the first Orange player to hit three homeruns in three-consecutive at-bats and the only player to account for all five of her team’s RBI in a single outing. The Bend, Ore. native was also named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Northeast All-Regional First Team, only the eighth Syracuse player to garner the accolade and the only player among all BIG EAST teams.
Kelling, a shortstop, was a leader both offensively and defensively for the Orange. She led the team with 58 hits and eight stolen bases and was second behind Kelley with a .320 batting average. Starting in every game, Kelling recorded 103 assists and 93 putouts. She was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on two separate occasions during the season.
Head Coach Leigh Ross and associate head coach Kyle Jamieson are back for their third season with Syracuse. This year the pair is joined by first-year assistant coach Wallace King and second-year graduate assistant coach Abby Habicht. Syracuse returns nine letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s squad and welcomes eight newcomers to the roster.
The 2009 season begins the weekend of February 6 when SU heads to the University of New Mexico to take on the Lobos in a three-game series. The gates to the SU Softball Stadium will open to Orange fans for the first time on Friday, March 27 when Syracuse hosts Pittsburgh in a doubleheader. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m.
