SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Tina Romagnuolo scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, helping the Syracuse women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Cincinnati at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 2. The Orange goes to 4-5-3 overall, 1-2-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Bearcats are 6-5-1 and 1-2-1 in conference action.
All the scoring took place in the first half of the contest. Cincinnati took the early lead, scoring in the ninth minute when Erin MacDonald passed the ball across the box to Kendall Loggins, who scored her fourth goal of the season. The Orange tied the score with just 58 seconds remaining in the first half. Senior Chelsea Berry played the ball into the box and Romagnuolo headed the ball into the back of the net. With the goal, Romagnuolo becomes the first SU freshman to score six goals in a season since the 2001 campaign when Natalie Galas had seven. Berry was credited with an assist on the play. It is her 10th career helper, moving her into a three-way tie for seventh place on the school career leader list with Tracy Stalker (1998-01) and Nina Scalzo (2000-04).
Both teams had chances to win the game in the extra sessions. Cincinnati was awarded a corner kick in the final seconds of the first overtime, but Emily Hebbeler shot hit the post, forcing a second 10-minute period. The Orange put the offensive pressure on immediately in the second overtime as sophomore Taylor Chamberlain hit the crossbar with her shot in the first minute of play. Chamberlain's shot ricocheted to senior Tessa MacDougall, who put shot a goal, which was saved by UC goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski.
“We've been creating scoring opportunities all season,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We're just not putting the ball in the back of the net. At some point someone has to step up and do that.”
Syracuse outshot Cincinnati, 22-10, and had six corner kicks to two for the Bearcats. SU goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan (Burke, Va.) recorded five saves, while Kaminski finished with 10.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday when it hosts BIG EAST foe Louisville at the SU Soccer Stadium at noon. Admission is free.
