
SU Wins Second Straight in Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange overcame two ties in Friday's 3-2 overtime victory at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, Oct. 23. Freshman forward Jessica Sorensen notched her first career goal for the Orange, while sophomore Lisa Mullan contributed one in the third period to send the game to overtime. Sophomore Janelle Malcolm scored the game-winning goal at the two-minute mark of the fourth period to give Syracuse its second consecutive win against an opponent receiving votes in the national polls.
Syracuse improves to a 2-4-1 record, while RPI is 2-3-2 on the season.
Allysen Weidner capitalized on a powerplay opportunity midway through the first period to open up the scoring for the Engineers, 1-0.
After being held in the penalty box, Malcolm crossed ice to the bench and received a pass from freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe. Although Malcolm's shot was blocked, it rebounded out in traffic to Sorensen, who scored the goal in the final four minutes of the second period to tie the game, 1-1.
The Orange kept the momentum going into the third period when Malcolm and sophomore Kelly Dimmen found Mullan, who scored SU's second goal at the 6:23 mark to give the Orange the 2-1 advantage. RPI responded in the last two minutes of the closing period when Whitney Naslund scored a powerplay goal to knot the game, 2-2, and force the overtime.
At the two-minute mark of overtime, Malcolm scored her fifth goal of the season with assists from sophomore Taylor Metcalfe and Mullan. It was Syracuse's only shot on goal in overtime and sealed the 3-2 Orange victory.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel and RPI's Sonja van der Bliek finished even with 24 saves each.
The Orange and Engineers will rematch on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. before SU returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion for its home opener against CHA rival Niagara on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
