TROY, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals during a five-minute major at the start of the third period en route to its 4-3 win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Orange swept the Engineers in its two-game series and advances to a 3-4-1 record, while RPI is 2-4-2 overall.
Freshman forward Kelsey Welch scored her first collegiate goal, while junior Julie Rising and freshmen Isabel Menard and Jessica Sorensen each scored in the victory, which extends Syracuse's win streak to three – it's longest of the season.
RPI scored first scored a powerplay goal by Sydney O'Keefe within the first five minutes of play. The Orange followed suit at the 14:26 mark of the second period when senior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer and junior forward Stefanie Marty teamed up on the assist to Rising to tie the game, 1-1.
The Engineers' Taylor Horton fought back to take the lead, 2-1, in the final minute of the second period, but Syracuse was quick to respond. A pair of penalties gave the Orange a five on three advantage to start the final period. Menard scored on a pass from Rising just 37 seconds into the third period to knot the game back up, 2-2.
Less than a minute later, Maschmeyer and Menard dished out assists to Welch, to give SU the 3-2 advantage. With less than four minutes left on the clock, Sorensen scored the game-winner to put the Orange up two, 4-2.
RPI attempted to fight back with a goal by Allison Wright in the closing minute of the game, but the Orange defense held off the Engineers attack to settle the score, 4-3.
The Orange will take a week off before playing CHA foe Niagara in its home opener on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
