SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Orange ice hockey team won its fourth consecutive game on Friday, Nov. 6 in its home opener against Niagara at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Sophomore Kylie Klassen and senior Gabrielle Beaudry each had their first goals of the season in the conference opener, helping the Orange to improve to a 4-4-1 record, while the Purple Eagles are now 3-4-2 on the season.
With the Orange up, 2-1, Niagara found itself in a power play opportunity after sophomore Lisa Mullan was penalized for body-checking with less than three minutes remaining in the game. The Purple Eagles pulled junior goaltender Jenni Bauer in the final minute, which gave Niagara a two-man advantage. However, the Orange was able to prevail to seal the victory.
"We tried not to get the kids to panic," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We just had to make sure they relied on one another and when they pulled their goalie, they were up six-on-four, and we didn't want to chase them around. They had a couple good picks. We turned the puck over, and we can't make those kinds of mistakes. Overall, we weathered the storm and did a pretty good job."
Syracuse was the first to score in the opening period when sophomore Janelle Malcolm passed the puck to sophomore Megan Skelly, who then dished out the assist to Klassen at the 10-minute mark. SU added to its lead early in the second period when Beaudry found the back of the net for the game-winner with assists from freshmen Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Kelsey Welch.
The Purple Eagles scored its lone goal less than five minutes later with a goal by freshman Daniela Dal Colle.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel finished with 20 saves, while Bauer had 23.
The Orange will host the Purple Eagles for a matinee game on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
