SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse ice hockey team split its series against CHA rival Niagara on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it lost, 3-2. Freshman Erin Burns scored her first collegiate goal in the matinee game, while junior Julie Rising added her fourth of the season. The Orange is now 4-5-1 on the season, while the Purple Eagles improve to 4-4-2.
Syracuse took the early lead when Burns found the back of the net at the 5:32 mark of the opening period. The Purple Eagles were quick to respond when senior Jennifer MacLean found freshman Jenna Hendrikx to tie the game, 1-1, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the period.
It didn't take long for the Orange to reclaim the lead after junior Stefanie Marty dished out the puck to Rising, who took it in for the goal in the opening minute of the second period. Niagara tied things up again less than three minutes later when MacLean scored on a helper from Hendrikx.
The Orange found itself down a man when Burns was penalized at the 16:23 mark. The Purple Eagles capitalized on its power play opportunity with only 11 seconds remaining in Burns' penalty, giving Niagara the one-point advantage and settling the score, 3-2, with less than two minutes remaining.
Syracuse will take a week off before continuing its conference play at Robert Morris on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
