Day 4 Results
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Syracuse wrapped up the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday evening at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Sophomore Kuba Kotynia not only swam his second NCAA 'B' cut of the championship, but he also broke his second Syracuse record in two days to lead the Orange on the final day of competition.
Kotynia finished fourth in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 1:57.75. He broke SU alum Luk Boral's 2006 record of 1:58.07. Another top finisher for Syracuse was sophomore Berk Kahraman. He placed fourth in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:47.30. Junior Arda Isiksalan followed Kahraman in the event, touching the wall soon after at 1:47.54 to place sixth. Rounding out the top men's individual performances were junior Alex Taraskin and junior Boldizsar Kiss. Taraskin finished seventh in the 100 Freestyle at 44.84, while Kiss finished seventh in the 200 Butterfly at 1:47.06.
Earlier in the day, sophomore Katlin O'Hara earned a spot in the SU record books during the morning prelims. O'Hara swam the 100 Freestyle in 51.31 to update the 2003 record set by Elyse McDonough. During the finals sophomore Natalie Mazzetta led the Orange women with a sixth place finish in the 200 Butterfly at a clip of 2:02.41. Senior Catrina Roth swam to an eighth place finish in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:02.11, and senior Sarah Manning placed 11th in the 1,650 Freestyle event (17:00.92).
The men's team of Kiss, junior Ryan Corcoran, senior Matt Brock and junior Alex Taraskin teamed up for the 400 Freestyle Relay. The men placed sixth in 3:01.54. O'Hara, junior Katelyn Schumacher, Mazzetta and Manning competed in the event to represent the Orange women and finished with an eighth place time of 3:29.62.
Notre Dame won its second-straight BIG EAST Championship, edging out Louisville with 782.5 total points.
