SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SU men's basketball team (20-8, 8-7) hosts Cincinnati (18-10, 8-7) in a conference showdown on Sunday, March 1. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. and is one of two home contests remaining for the Orange this season. Prior to the game, Syracuse will honor former basketball star Billy Gabor by retiring his #17 jersey. Gabor will be the ninth men's basketball standout to have his jersey raised to the Dome rafters.
Gabor, a two-time Helms Foundation All-American, was the program's top scorer for four seasons between 1942 and 1948. His jersey will join those of Dave Bing, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Vic Hanson, Billy Owens, Wilmeth Sadat-Singh, Rony Seikaly, and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, which have been previously honored.
Gabor was a fixture in the Syracuse lineup during the 1942-43, 1945-46, 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons. He missed two seasons while serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Gabor was the first SU player to tally 400 season points when he scored 409 in 1946-47. He also was the first to score 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,344. He still ranks tied for 28th in career scoring at SU. Gabor set what was then the school record for game points, scoring 36.
Sunday's contest will be televised live on the BIG East Network (Ch. 26 in Syracuse). Fans can also hear the action on the Syracuse ISP Sports Network and its flagship station TK 99 (99.5 FM). A live audio stream will be available online at SUathletics.com for Orange All Access subscribers.
