
Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Mark Vyzas (Plainsfield, N.J.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 20, 2009.
Vyzas is a three-year member of the No. 10 Syracuse men's rowing team. This past weekend, the Orange hosted No. 9 Cornell and No. 13 Navy for the Goes Cup and Stagg Trophy. He helped guide the third varsity eight to a second place finish with a time of 6:31.8. Cornell won the race with a time of 6:18.4, while Navy finished third at 6:42.7.
Vyzas, a psychology major in the College of Arts & Sciences, and the rest of the men's rowing team is back in action this weekend in Boston, Mass. The Orange competes with Boston University and Columbia in the Conlan Cup on Saturday, April 25. The team's final home race is May 17 when it hosts Dartmouth in the Packard Cup.
Junior Ashley Spicer (Round Rock, Texas) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 20, 2009.
Spicer finished the 2008-09 season with a 15-6 overall record at the No. 2 doubles slot with teammate Chelsea Jones. She wrapped up her junior campaign with a 14-8 singles record.
Spicer helped lead the Syracuse women's tennis team to one of its most successful seasons in program history. SU's season ended Saturday, April 18 at the BIG EAST Tournament in a 4-2 loss to fourth-seeded Marquette in the consolation bracket. The Orange finished the year 16-7 overall, with a 10-4 record in conference play to tie for seventh in the BIG EAST standings.
A sport management major in the College of Human Ecology, Spicer transferred from Washington State after her freshman year. Last year, she finished her sophomore season with the Orange with a 15-10 singles record.
