SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball hosts its final foe from the state of New York on Wednesday, April 22 when Siena arrives at the SU Softball Stadium. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2003. Syracuse (26-14) has won every game with Siena (11-22) for a 6-0 all-time series record.
The Orange is coming off a 7-1 week where SU defeated its first nationally-ranked opponent since 2006. In a doubleheader with Louisville, Syracuse upset the Cardinals 10-5 in game one. An 8-2 setback in game two ended the Orange's eight-game winning streak which dated back to a 5-2 win against Georgetown on April 11. Syracuse's other six wins last week came in sweeps of Canisius, Cornell and Providence.
Head coach Leigh Ross has five players batting above .300 with freshman Stephanie Watts (.371) and senior Jamie Kelling (.361) leading the way. Watts has hit a team-best seven home runs this season, while Kelling leads the squad with 48 hits. The pair combines for a majority of the team's 43 steals. Watts is 15-for-17 in steal attempts, while Kelling holds the SU single-season record with 17 steals in 19 attempts.
Freshman Jenna Caira leads the Orange pitching staff with a 13-5 overall record, including guiding the Orange to the 10-5 win against UofL. Her 2.25 era is second on the team and her 141 strikeouts ranks seventh in SU's career records.
Scouting Siena
The Saints recently ended a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 nine-inning victory against St. Peter's on April 19. Senior Jamie Piela slammed a long ball out of the park for the game winning run to keep the Saints undefeated in extra-inning contests.
