Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore Rachel Helman (Miami, Fla.) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 11, 2009.

Helman helped the Orange softball team to one of its most successful seasons in program history. Syracuse made its fifth straight and sixth overall appearance at the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, May 7. Helman helped lead the Orange in a 5-4, nine inning loss to the Bulls at the tournament. She finished the game 2-for-4 with one run.

The outfielder finished the season with a .296 batting average and had three steals. She registered seven multi-hit games and recorded a career-high four RBI in SU's 10-5 victory against nationally-ranked Louisville earlier in the season.

Helman, a recording and allied entertainment major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Orange softball team concluded their season at the BIG EAST Tournament. The team had an overall record of 30-21 and finished with a 12-10 record in conference play.

Senior Ryan Planer (Syracuse, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 11, 2009.

Planer helped guide the second varsity eight in a successful day on Sunday, May 10 at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. In the fourth seat, Planer helped the Orange place third in Heat No. 1 with a time of 5:55.866. The second varsity eight boat went on to place second behind Yale in the petite Final at a clip of 5:59.957.

Planer is a four-year member of the Syracuse men's crew team. He is completing a dual major in biology in history in the College of Arts and Sciences. Planer and the rest of the men's crew team hit the water again on May 17 when they host Dartmouth for the Packard Cup.
