PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Former Syracuse standout Katie Rowan recorded three points to help Team USA to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory against defending champion Australia in the final round of pool play at the FIL World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic on Monday, June 22. The United States now stands at 4-0 and will face the winner of the “play-in game” between Ireland and Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
After Australia jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Rowan put Team USA on the board when she found the back of the net off an assist from Caroline Cryer. Rowan assisted on Michelle DeJuliis' goal that brought the United States to within three, 7-4, but Australia scored the final two goals of the half to take a 9-4 halftime lead. The second half was all Team USA as it outscored Australia, 6-0, for a one-goal victory against the defending World Cup champions. Rowan added a goal in the second half and tied for team-high scoring honors with three points. She recorded 16 points (7g, 9a) in pool play, which ties her for second on the team.
The Haudenosaunee national team was eliminated from the World Cup with a 12-6 loss to Ireland. Awehiyo Thomas had one goal against Ireland, and finished with a team-best 11 goals in the tournament. In addition, rising junior Lindsey Steeprock played in all three games at the World Cup and recorded four ground balls and six draw controls.
