Regy Thorpe notched his first career victory as head coach, as No. 12 Syracuse (1-3, 0-2 ACC) topped No. 13 Loyola (2-3, 1-0 Patriot League), 15-7, at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.
Molly Guzik led the offense with a career-high three goals and seven draw controls, while Joely Caramelli matched her with a hat trick of her own, tying a previous career high. Ashlee Volpe paced the team with four points, setting a career high with four assists.
On the other end, the Orange defense limited Loyola to just 13 shots and a season-low seven goals, with Izzy Lahah logging a team-best three caused turnovers.
The victory marks Syracuse's 12th consecutive win over the Greyhounds dating back to 2015.
Syracuse struck first, with Caramelli and Guzik rattling off two quick goals to put the Orange out in front early, 2-0. The Greyhounds got one back but Courtney Maclay notched her first goal in a Syracuse uniform, sneaking one through the goalkeeper's legs to extend the lead to 3-1.
After Loyola pulled back within one before the end of the first quarter, Mackenzie Borbi scored her first career goal early in the second to extend the lead. The two teams traded goals before a free-position shot from Caroline Trinkaus with under five minutes remaining in the half gave Syracuse a 6-4 advantage heading into the break.
The Orange offense kicked into gear in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals to build a commanding 13-4 lead. Five different players found the back of the net in the frame, with Guzik and Mileena Cotter each tallying twice to help put the game out of reach.
Loyola snapped its scoreless streak early in the fourth quarter, but the Orange continued to hold strong on the back line to seal up the win.
Syracuse is back on the road this weekend, set for an ACC clash with Louisville. The matchup with the Cardinals is set for 12 p.m. and will air on ACC Network Extra.
