SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Kyle Heath (steeplechase) and Bernard Bush (long jump) and junior Uhunoma Osazuwa (heptathlon) have all qualified to represent the Orange at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Fayetteville hosted by the University of Arkansas. The four-day event spans from Wednesday, June 10 to Saturday, June 13.
Heath is making his second-consecutive trip back to the NCAA Championship and looking to repeat as an All-American. Last year, he broke the school record in the steeplechase and placed six, garnering All-America status (Top eight receivers All-America rank). Bush and Osazuwa have enjoyed great postseason success this year, but both venture into unchartered territory at their first NCAA Championship appearance.
Osazuwa's route to the NCAA Championship will make up the first part of the Orange championship preview.
Osazuwa has won all three heptathlon events she has competed in this season. Highlighting this season's feats were two postseason victories at the ECAC (5,258 points) and BIG EAST Championships (5,236 points). The Las Vegas, Nev. native also captured the crown in the season opener at Florida State with a total of 4,797 points.
Her 5,258 point aggregate for the win at Princeton was just enough to vault the third-year multi athlete into her first NCAA Championship appearance.
Through her heptathlon trials this season, the ECAC and BIG EAST champ made the grade to compete in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump at the NCAA Regionals two weeks ago. In the high jump, Osazuwa posted her second-best mark of 1.74m for seventh and was timed in 14.14 during the preliminary heat of the 100-meter hurdles in Greensboro, N.C.
At the Larry Ellis Invite on April 17, Osazuwa dusted the 100-meter hurdles field for first place in 13.85.
Osazuwa is one of 26 heptathletes to vie for the national championship.
Below is Osazuwa's schedule for competition:
Thursday, June 11 at 11:15 a.m.:
100 Hurdles | High Jump | Shot Put | 200-meter Dash
Friday, June 12 at 1:45 p.m.:
