SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's rowing team released its schedule for the 2009-10 season. The Orange competes in two events in the fall season, including the Princeton Chase on October 25. The Orange hosts the annual Syracuse Fall Invitational on October 31.
The Orange opens its spring schedule in San Diego in the San Diego Crew Classic on March 27-28. Syracuse then travels to Annapolis, M.D. to compete for the Goes Trophy against Navy and Cornell on April 17. The Orange continues on the road to Pelham, N.Y. for the Conlon Cup against Boston University on April 24.
Clifford “Tip” Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914 created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the three schools. Goes coxswained the varsity eight which won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in 1913. He had a lifelong passion in rowing and served as chairman of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee. Last season the Orange lost the Goes Trophy to Cornell after a three year winning streak, the loss also marked the first cup race loss since Dartmouth in 2005.
Syracuse and Boston University have been racing for the Conlon Cup every year since 1987, when the trophy was first created. The Orange has won the cup 12 times in 23 years. Syracuse has won four consecutive and eight of the last 11 Conlon Cups.
SU will also race against Columbia in Pelham. The Orange then travels to Seattle for the Opening Day Regatta on May 1.
The Eastern Sprints will be held on May 16 in Worchester, Mass. Syracuse will travel to Hanover, N.H. for the Packard Cup against Dartmouth in its last cup race of the spring season on May 23.
Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Cup in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU class of 1906). The sterling silver cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship. The Orange has won four consecutive cups, sweeping Dartmouth in the 2009 spring season.
The 2009-10 I.R.A. Regatta will take place June 3-5, location to be determined.
Last season, the Orange finished eighth at the I.R.A. Regatta, SU's best finish since 2006, when it also placed eighth overall.
