Tincher's Complete Biography
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange softball has added professional pitcher Angela Tincher to the coaching staff, third-year head coach Leigh Ross announced today. One of the most decorated and accomplished pitchers in collegiate softball history, Tincher will guide the Syracuse pitching staff in 2010.
“I am so excited to announce that Angela Tincher will be joining our coaching staff this spring,” Ross said. “Her success and experience at the top levels of our game will be valuable not only to our pitching staff but to all of our players. She has proven herself as one of the best pitchers in the game and will help take our program to a higher level. So far she has impressed me with the rapport she has built with the pitchers and the confidence they have in her as an instructor. Her strong ability to communicate both the technical and mental aspects of pitching has helped to make her one of the best collegiate pitchers, and will aid her in mentoring our pitching staff.”
A 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech, Tincher compiled a 123-35 record in the circle with a 0.78 ERA during her four-year career. She tallied 2,149 strikeouts, which ranks third in NCAA softball history, threw 14 no-hitters - including a pair of perfect games - and posted 120 double-digit strikeout performances for the Hokies.
“I'm very excited to start my coaching career in such a respected athletic department with Syracuse softball,” Tincher said. “We have a great team and coaching staff, and I'm looking forward to working with the pitchers this spring. I enjoyed my four years as a college player immensely, and I hope to help the current student-athletes do the same in any way I can.”
During her senior season, Tincher threw a no-hitter against the USA Softball Olympic Team, ending the squad's 185-game pre-Olympic win streak. She also helped lead Virginia Tech to its first-ever Women's College World Series appearance, while establishing school and ACC single-season records in victories (38) and strikeouts (679) while leading the nation in ERA for the second-straight season (0.63).
Following her senior season Tincher was named the National Player of the Year by USA Softball and Honda, earned ACC Pitcher of the Year honors for the third-straight season, was a first-team All-American selection and the ACC Tournament MVP. She was a 2008 finalist for the ESPY award honoring the College Female Athlete of the Year and one of five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded to the NCAA's top female athlete. Tincher also earned first-team All-ACC, the NCAA Top VII Award and ACC Female Athlete of the Year honors.
Tincher was drafted in the first round of the 2008 National Pro Fastpitch, or NPF, collegiate draft by the Akron Racers and went on to lead the league in strikeouts and earn all-star honors as a rookie. In 2009, she signed a contract with Leopalace 21 of the Japan Professional League, where she played in the spring, before returning to the United States and earning a spot on the United States Pan Am Qualifier Team. She is also one of 13 athletes selected as an alternate for the 2010 USA Softball Women's National Team.
Tincher will make her coaching debut when the Orange opens its season on February 12 at the Louisiana-Lafayette Mardi Gras Tournament in Lafayette, La.
