Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse tennis team opened its 2010 campaign in dominating fashion, as it swept Albany, 7-0, at the Drumlins Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Impressive performances were had by every member of the Orange squad, with every player coming away with a victory in both singles and doubles action.
Sophomore Emily Harman backed up her spot at number one by easily defeating Albany's Livia Gherman with twin scores of 6-2 in her two sets to win the top match in singles action. Sophomore Alessondra Parra was tested by Laine Mackey in their sets at the number two position, but Parra prevailed with scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
Freshman newcomer CC Sardinha put out an exceptional first performance in her Orange debut by going a perfect 6-0 in her sets to win against Sarah Ianonne. Another fresh face to the Orange squad was Eleanor Peters, who came back from an injury in the fall season to win her sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-1 against Caitlin Crowley.
The Orange squad's captains also had impressive days. Junior co-captain Christina Tan won a tiring three-set match against Albany's Susan Ma, while her fellow captain, junior Simone Kalhorn, won her sets against Aubrey Brooks at the three position.
Doubles action proved to be just as successful for the Orange, as it won all three sets against the Great Danes to secure the doubles point. Senior Chelsea Jones paired up with Harman in the number one doubles spot and defeated Albany's pairing of Gherman and Ma with a score of 8-2. The teaming of Sardinha and Parra and Kalhorn and Peters resulted in two 8-5 wins against their respective Albany pairings.
Syracuse stands at 1-0 on the season and awaits two BIG EAST foes this weekend. The Orange will take on St. John's at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Rutgers at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will be played at the Drumlins Tennis Center and full coverage can be found at SUAthletics.com.
