
'Cuse Set to Open ACC Tournament Play

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's tennis team begins its ACC Tournament journey on Wednesday as 13 seed Syracuse (7-12, 3-9) clashes with 12 seed Wake Forest (12-12, 4-8). The match is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will take place at the Cary Tennis Park. The winner will advance to the third round to take on 5 seed Miami.Â
REGULAR SEASON RECAP
Monika Wojcik posted a 10-8 duals record in singles play, including a 6-4 record when playing at the No. 4 position. She added seven doubles victories which tied for the squad lead. Nelly Knezkova and Serafima Shastova both logged seven doubles wins as well. Emma Scaldalai finished the regular season strong, posting wins against Florida State and Clemson. Scaldalai finished her inaugural collegiate season with a 5-4 record in the highly competitive ACC. Syracuse defeated three ITA-ranked opponents this spring: Boston College, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Â
SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's clash marks the 19th all-time meeting between the two squads, with Wake Forest holding a 13-5 advantage. The Orange triumphed over the Demon Deacons earlier this season, storming back from a 3-1 deficit en route to victory in Winston-Salem on March 27. Consecutive singles wins from Knezkova and Leena Bennetto leveled the contest at 3-3, and Wojcik sealed the win in a three-set-thriller.Â
SCOUTING WAKE FOREST
Wake Forest posted a 12-12 record in spring duals including a 4-8 record in conference play. The Demon Deacons enter the ACC Tournament on a strong run of play, having won three of their last five contests.Â
Evie Oxford was named the ACC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week on Feb. 17. Oxford was the No. 8 nationally ranked recruit last year and logged a 17-2 duals record in singles play. Junior Sankavi Gownder was also dominant, posting a 15-1 duals record in singles action including a perfect 6-0 in conference play. Senior Nevena Carton entered the ITA Women's Singles Rankings this week at No. 104. Carton and sophomore Kady Tannenbaum were ranked No. 66 in the most recent ITA Women's Doubles poll. The duo owned a 13-8 record and went 7-5 in conference play.Â
