Orange And Red Storm Square Off In NY Soccer Showdown

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange (2-5-4, 0-1-2) begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 13 when it travels to Queens, N.Y. to battle St. John's (6-5-0, 0-3-0). The game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium. Both squads are searching for their first conference victories of the season.
Syracuse is coming off an undefeated week. The Orange beat #24 Colgate, 3-2, in overtime on Oct. 6 to earn its first home victory of the season. Syracuse also shut out DePaul, 0-0, on Oct. 9 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
BLANKING THE BIG EAST
The Orange has registered two shutouts in its first three BIG EAST games. Syracuse blanked Pitt on Sept. 25 and DePaul on Oct. 9 both by the score of 0-0. Redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolohas allowed just one goal in 297:30 against conference foes and owns a .30 goals-against average, good for third in the BIG EAST in conference-only games.
WORKING OVERTIME
Syracuse played two more overtime games last week, increasing its total to seven extra-session encounters in 11 outings this season. It's the most overtime games in a season for the Orange since 2003 when it had seven matches go into OT. Five of the team's last six games have been overtime matches and four of its five home games thus far have gone into extra time. Syracuse is 2-1-4 in its seven overtime games in 2010.
BRODE RECOGNIZED BY BIG EAST
Syracuse sophomore midfielder Mark Brode was named to the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Oct. 11 for his performance against Colgate last week. Brode scored a career-best two goals, including the game-winner, in SU's 3-2 victory against the Raiders. He now ranks second on the team with four points. Junior Nick Roydhouse still leads the way with nine points on four goals and one assist.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's is 6-5-0 on the season and 0-3-0 in the BIG EAST. The team has lost three of its last four outings after winning four straight.
The Red Storm is the second-highest scoring team in the BIG EAST this season with 20 goals in 11 outings. Tadeu Terra and Pablo Battuto Punyed are tied for the squad lead with four goals each. Terra, a preseason All-BIG EAST selection leads the team in assists (5) and points (13). Unlike past St. John's teams, the 2010 outfit has been a little shaky defensively of late. After opening the year with four shutouts in six games, the Red Storm has allowed two goals in three of its last four. Rafael Diaz played the majority of the minutes between the posts. He has 54, two shutouts and a 1.14 goals-against average.
Dr. Dave Masur is in his 20th year at the St. John's helm. He has guided the Red Storm to four NCAA College Cup appearances, including the 1996 NCAA title and the 2008 national semifinals. He is 339-110-68 as a college head coach. He entered this season third among active NCAA Division I coaches in winning percentage and tied for seventh in wins.
THE SERIES WITH ST. JOHN'S
St. John's leads the all-time series against the Orange, 17-7-5. The last time Syracuse defeated the Red Storm was in 1996. St. John's went on to win the national championship that season. The Orange also won the first two meetings of the series back in 1982.
