QUEENS, N.Y. – The Orange (2-5-5, 0-1-3) men's soccer team earned a point in the conference standings for the second straight outing with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against defending BIG EAST Tournament champion St. John's (6-5-1, 0-3-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Belson Stadium. The Syracuse defense surrendered 25 shots in the match, but held the second-highest scoring team in the BIG EAST without a goal to record its third shutout in four conference outings.
Syracuse hasn't allowed a goal to a conference opponent in more than 220 minutes dating back to the second half of its match at USF on Oct. 2.
Redshirt senior keeper Jeremy Vuolo recorded six saves against the Red Storm to post his second consecutive clean sheet and his third shutout of the season.
The Red Storm jumped on top of the game early and outshot the Orange, 25-7, for the match. However, the hosts were never able to completely solve the Syracuse defense and put only six of its attempts on goal.
Vuolo tallied four saves in the first half to help keep the Red Storm off the scoreboard as St. John's outshot the Orange, 9-2, in the opening 45 minutes. St. John's continued to apply pressure in the second half generating 11 more shots, but again the Syracuse defense held firm.
Both sides recorded three shots in the first extra frame. But this time it was Syracuse that was the more dangerous team as sophomores Mawuena Agbossoumonde and Mark Brode created back-to-back offensive chances in the final minute. Agbossoumonde's header off a corner kick service was blocked and Brode's follow-up attempt sailed wide.
The Red Storm's Dom Sarle had the only shot on goal of the second overtime, but Vuolo turned that aside in the 104th minute to secure the stalemate.
St. John's keeper Rafael Diaz finished with two saves. He stopped junior Fredrik Forsman's shot in the 21st minute and turned away a drive by rookie Brett Jankouskas in the 78th minute to earn his third shutout of the year.
Forsman, Jankouskas and Agbossoumonde attempted two shots each to pace the Orange offense. Tadeu Terra led St. John's with six shots, none of which were on goal.
Syracuse continues its three-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Orange will face BIG EAST Blue Division foe Marquette at 8:05 p.m. at Valley Fields.
Match Notes: Wednesday's draw snapped a three-game losing streak for the Orange against the Red Storm … Vuolo's six saves increased his career saves total to 259 … Jankouskas made his third straight start at forward … The match was the team's eighth overtime game of the season … It's the most extra-session matches for the Orange since it played nine in 1990.
