Syracuse Plays Final Two Road Games

The eighth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (8-4, 3-0) hits the road one last time this regular season with games against 20th-ranked Stanford (8-3) and Georgetown (6-8, 1-2). The Orange will take on the Cardinal at Alumni Turf Field in Albany at noon on Friday, October 15. They will then head south to face BIG EAST rival Georgetown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 16.
Stanford's Series Notes
Syracuse meets Stanford for the fourth all-time matchup between the two programs. The Orange is a perfect 3-0 against the Cardinal. Syracuse won 3-2 in overtime in their last meeting in 2005 at Stanford.
Last Meeting with the Cardinal
Paige Sullivan knocked in the game winning goal off a free hit by Michelle Sola in overtime to propel the Orange to a 3-2 victory against the Cardinal in Palo Alto, Calif. Ashley Fry and Meg Ryan scored goals for the Orange. Heather Hess notched six saves in her first career start.
Georgetown Series Notes
Syracuse and Georgetown square off for the tenth time on Saturday. The Orange has dominated the all-time series with a flawless 9-0 record versus the Hoyas and has outscored Georgetown 61-5, including a 26-0 advantage in the last two meetings. Syracuse clobbered Georgetown 10-0 in their meeting at J.S. Coyne Stadium last season.
Last Meeting with the Hoyas
Six different Syracuse players scored as the Orange routed the Hoyas 10-0 on October 9, 2009 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad led the Orange with eight points off three goals and two assists. Senior back Maggie Befort and junior forward Heather Susek each netted two goals. Sophomore back Amy Kee added a goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Shannon Connolly and sophomore back Erika Wachter each scored their first career goals. All-American Martina Loncarica rounded off the offensive barrage by dishing out one assist.
Syracuse players against Georgetown
Ten Orange players have recorded at least one point against the Hoyas in their careers. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad leads the way with 13 points off five goals and three assists. Senior back Maggie Befort has netted five goals and dished out two assists for a total of 12 career points versus Georgetown. All-American Martina Loncarica has 10 points off three goals and four assists. Senior forward Kristin Girouard has scored two goals and tallied two assists against the Hoyas for six points. Sophomore back Amy Kee has four points off one goal and two assists against Georgetown. Junior forward Heather Susek has scored two goals versus the Hoyas. Senior forward Shelby Shraden, junior midfielder Shannon Connolly and sophomore back Erika Wachter each have one goal. Nicole Nelson rounds off the points with one assist against Georgetown.
Scouting the Orange
All-American Martina Loncarica leads the Orange with 19 points off a team-high seven goals and second-best five assists. She is tied for first in the BIG EAST Conference with four game-winning goals. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer has 14 points off three goals and a team-best eight assists. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad has netted six goals for a total of 12 points. Junior forward Heather Susek has scored four goals and tallied three assists for 11 points. Sophomore back Amy Kee has racked up six points off two goals and two assists. She also has one defensive save. Senior forward Kristin Girouard has scored two goals and dished out one assist for five points. Junior midfielder Liz McInerney has tallied four points off one goal and two assists. Senior forward Shelby Schraden, sophomore forward Kelsey Millman and sophomore back Iona Holloway each have scored one goal for the Orange. Goalkeeper Leann Stiver ranks second in the BIG EAST with a 1.36 goals against average. She has also notched 44 saves. Syracuse has outscored its opponents 31-16 on the season. The Orange has outshot its counterparts 239-110 and hold a 106-73 advantage in penalty corners.
Scouting Stanford
The No. 20 Cardinal (8-3, 3-1) won its lone game last week, defeating Harvard, 6-0, on Friday, October 8 at Stanford. Stanford travels east this week, where it will face the Orange in Albany, N.Y., Rutgers in Providence, R.I. on Sunday, October 17 and Northeastern in Boston, Mass. on Monday, October 18. The Cardinal has won its last three games, highlighted by a 4-2 victory versus then No. 8 Wake Forest on September 27. Stanford features a balanced offensive attack in which 15 different players having scored goals. It is led by junior forward Stephanie Byrne, who has 13 points off five goals and three assists. 2009 NorPac Rookie of the Year, Becky Dru, has netted four goals and a team-high four assists for a total of 12 points. All-American Xanthe Travlos has recorded nine points off four goals and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Alessandra Moss has an 1.36 goals against average and 33 saves.
Scouting Georgetown
Georgetown (6-8 , 1-2) lost both their games last weekend during a tour through Connecticut. The Hoyas lost 9-1 to Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. on October 9 and 3-2 to Farfield in Fairfield, Conn. on October 10. Georgetown has lost eight out of its last 11 games after beginning the season with a 3-0 record. The Hoyas are paced by its trio of sophomore forwards Catherine Shugrue, Charlotte Tierney and Annie Wilson. Shugrue paces the Hoyas with 28 points off a team-best 12 goals and four assists. Tierney has notched eight goals and tallied two assists for a total of 18 points. Wilson has recorded 18 points off five goals and a team-high eight assists. Georgetown has been outscored by its opponents 40-34 on the season.
Orange in the Record Books
Senior back Maggie Befort has scored a school record 113 points in her four-year career. Befort is also second on SU's all-time assist chart with 47 and tied for eighth in goals scored with 33. All-American Martina Loncarica ranks first on SU's all-time assists list with 52. She is also second on the all-time points list with 107. All-American Lindsey Conrad has scored a school record 44 goals. She is also third on SU's all-time points list with 106.
Orange All-Time Greats
All-American Lindsey Conrad ranks third among active players in career points with 150 and fourth in career goals with 63. Senior back Maggie Befort is fifth among active players in career assists with 47 and 11th in points with 113. All-American Martina Loncarica is second among active players in career assists with 53 and 13th in points with 107. Syracuse is the only team to have three players record 100-plus career points. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver leads active players in career saves percentage at .828 and is eighth in career goals-against-average at 1.30. Head coach Ange Bradley's winning percentage (.714) ranks sixth among active coaches.
Miscellaneous Tidbits
The Orange is first in the BIG EAST in shots per game (19.92). Syracuse has been ranked in the top 10 for 28 consecutive weeks. SU was ranked 17th on August 28, 2008, but moved up to number seven a week later and has not dropped out of the top 10 since. The Orange has won 11 consecutive BIG EAST Regular season games dating back to October 18, 2008. Syracuse's 2-1 overtime loss to Kent State on September 4 was its first loss to a non-ranked team since October 25, 2007 (52 games ago). The Orange is now 52-37-12 in overtime games.
Foreign Flair
The Orange boasts six international players on its roster. Each one has made significant contributions this season. All-American Martina Loncarica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) leads the Orange with 19 points off a team-high seven goals and second-best five assists. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Northeastern and Northwestern. Junior midfielder Liz McInerney (Dublin, Ireland) has started in all 12 games for Syracuse. She has six points off two goals and two assists. Freshman back Laura Hahnefeldt (Hamburg, Germany) has started 11 games for the Orange, helping limit its opponents to 16 goals off only 110 shots. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Albany.

Freshman back Laura Hahnefeldt was named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Syracuse's 2-1 overtime victory at No. 18 Albany on October 10. All-American Martina Loncarica also earned accolades as she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Field Hockey Honor roll for her efforts against the Great Danes on Sunday. Hahnefeldt and the Orange defense limited the Great Danes to just six shots. The freshman and her teammates did not allow a single shot in the second half and only one in overtime. Loncarica played a part in both goals in Syracuse's 2-1 overtime victory at Albany. Loncarica won the game with her goal just under seven minutes into overtime. The junior took a tip from freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer in front of the cage, putting the ball past Albany goalkeeper Kristi Troch into the low right post. Loncarica also crossed a ball to senior forward Kristin Girouard, who deflected the ball into the top of the cage at 32:16 to tie the game, 1-1.
Last Weekend in Review
All-American Martina Loncarica scored the game winning goal in overtime off an assist from freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer in Syracuse's lone game last weekend to lead the Orange to a 2-1 victory versus Albany October 10 at Alumni Turf Field in Albany. Senior forward Kristin Girouard scored the Orange's other goal off a Loncarica assist. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Sayer recorded the win by making three saves in her first career action.
