
SU Continues Road Trip At Marquette

MILWAUKEE - Syracuse (2-5-5, 0-1-3) continues its three-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it take on BIG EAST Blue Division opponent Marquette (4-4-4, 1-1-2) at 8:05 p.m. at Valley Fields. The Orange is coming off a 0-0 draw against defending BIG EAST champion St. John's, while the Golden Eagles lost, 4-1, at Notre Dame on Oct. 13.
Saturday's game marks the Orange's second visit to Milwaukee. The first time Syracuse and Marquette met at Valley Fields was in 2008 and the Orange emerged with a 1-0 triumph.
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange earned its third point in the BIG EAST standings on Wednesday with its 0-0 draw at St. John's. Redshirt senior keeper Jeremy Vuolo made six saves to pick up his third shutout of the year. Vuolo combined with the back four of Justin Arena, Jakob Karlgren, Robbie Hughes and David Neumann to keep the high-scoring Red Storm off the scoreboard.
The tie ended a three-game losing streak for the Orange against St. John's.
DOING IT WITH DEFENSE
Syracuse has not allowed a goal in BIG EAST play in more than 200 minutes dating back to its Oct. 2 match at USF. The Orange has shut out three of its four conference foes thus far and has four clean sheets on the season. Vuolo has lowered his goals-against average to 1.05 and increased his season save percentage to .821.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE
The Golden Eagles lost for the first time in eight games Wednesday at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish's four goals tied for the most allowed by Marquette this season.
Calum Mallace leads the Golden Eagles in all three major offensive categories - goals (3), assists 4) and points (10). He also is also tops in the conference with 50 shots. Chris Madsen has chipped in six points on three goals and Ryan Robb has four points on a goal and two assists. Goalie David Check is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST with five shutouts this season. He also has a 0.94 goals-against average and 48 saves.
Head coach Louis Bennett is in his fifth season at Marquette. He has an overall record of 149-116-33, which includes 10 seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Bennett led the Golden Eagles to their first BIG EAST Tournament appearance in 2009.
THE SERIES WITH MARQUETTE
The Orange leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 2-0-1. Syracuse defeated Marquette, 3-0, in 1989 in a tournament hosted by Wisconsin. Since the Golden Eagles joined the BIG EAST, the two teams have played twice, tying, 1-1, in 2005 at the SU Soccer Stadium and the Orange winning, 1-0, in its aforementioned trip to Valley Fields.
