SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Mark Brode scored with 32 seconds left in overtime to propel the SU men's soccer team (2-5-3) to a 3-2 victory over #24 Colgate (5-2-3) on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Brode scored on a free kick from 20 yards out to secure the Orange's first home win of the season.
“I just wanted to hit it and curve it as fast as I possibly could and it went into the back of the net,” Brode said of his match-winner. “I thought it was going over at first, but it curved in right over the goalie.”
The overtime strike was Brode's second goal of the match and it came on Syracuse's only shot attempt of the overtime period. The goal helped the Orange withstand a rally by Colgate. The Raiders scored twice in the second half to force the extra session.
In the first half, Syracuse played some of its best soccer of the season and Brode played a key role in helping the Orange build a 2-0 advantage. He netted his first goal of the year when he headed a Nick Roydhouse corner kick into the lower part of the Colgate goal at the 24:54 mark.
Syracuse fed off the momentum of Brode's early goal. Just over a minute later, junior Fredrik Forsman chipped the ball over the head of Colgate keeper Chris Miller to push the SU advantage to two at the half.
But the Raiders were not out of it. Down by two, Colgate responded in the second period. Shane Conlin got the Raiders on the board in the 75th minute when he finished a Wade Martin cross, and they tied the match on a Steven Miller goal with 4:57 to play in regulation.
The Raiders continued to attack in overtime, outshooting the Orange, 4-1, and they nearly won the match in the 95th minute, however, Orange keeper Ryan Jones made a leaping save on a Jeff Leach chance to keep it 2-2. That save set the stage for Brode, whose right-footed free kick curled into the upper right 90 after a foul was whistled just outside the Colgate penalty area.
Jones, making his second start of the year, finished with six saves to earn his first win of 2010. Miller finished with one save for the Raiders.
The victory extended the Orange's winning streak when scoring at least three times to 30 games dating back to 1998.
The Orange is in action again on Saturday, Oct.9 when it hosts DePaul in a BIG EAST Conference match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: Brode's two goals Wednesday were a career high … Redshirt senior Geoff Lytle was credited with an assist on Forsman's goal … Lytle leads the Orange with two assists this season … Roydhouse's assist was the 10th of his career and his first as a member of the Orange … Jones started in place of redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolo who missed the match after receiving a red card at USF on Oct. 2 … Syracuse is 213-15-17 all-time when scoring at least three goals.
