ORANGE REWIND
The Orange went 0-1-1 last week. Syracuse earned its third consecutive draw, tying Canisius, 1-1, in a non-conference match on Sept. 28 before losing in its first BIG EAST road game, 4-0, at USF on Oct. 2. Against Canisius, junior Nick Roydhouse tallied his fourth goal of the season late in the first half to help the Orange overcome a 1-0 deficit to earn the tie. At USF, the Orange remained within striking distance for the majority of the game before surrendering three goals in the final 12:30 to produce the final score.
JONES LIKELY TO START VERSUS COLGATE
Redshirt sophomore goalie Ryan Jones will likely receive his second start of the year Wednesday against Colgate. He will replace redshirt senior Jeremy Vuolo who was issued a red card and ejected late in the match at USF. Per NCAA rules, any player that receives a red card has to sit out the team's following game.
Jones replaced Vuolo at USF and played the final 12:30 against the Bulls. For the season, Jones has appeared in three games, including starting the Orange's match against Northeastern at the Mayor's Cup on Sept. 10. Jones registered four saves in the first half versus the Huskies to help the team to a 1-0 overtime victory.
Jones has played well against the Raiders in his career. Last season, Jones made his first collegiate start against the Raiders and he tallied a personal-best 12 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss at Van Doren Field. It was the most saves for any BIG EAST goalkeeper in a single match last season.
SCOUTING COLGATE
The Raiders are ranked 24th in in the latest NSCAA national poll, released on Oct. 5, and they are the top-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Colgate is 5-1-3 overall with its only loss coming at Long Island on Sept. 26.
Sophomore Mike Reidy and junior Matt Schuber lead the Raiders with five points on two goals and one assist each. Senior Jeff Leach and junior Steven Miller are also offensive threats for Colgate. They each have a goal and an assist on the year. Defensively, the Raiders are one of the top teams in the nation. Colgate lists seventh nationally in goals-against average at 0.40 and has five shutouts on the year. Goalkeepers Chris Miller and Grant Reed have combined for 31 saves. Miller has played seven games and is 4-1-2 with four clean sheets. Reed is 1-0-1 and has one shutout.
Head coach Erik Ronning is 51-32-20 overall in his career. Colgate has qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in four of Ronning's first five seasons. The Raiders won back-to-back Patriot League Tournament titles in 2007 and 2008.
THE SERIES WITH COLGATE
The Syracuse-Colgate series dates back to the early days of the Orange soccer program with the two teams first squaring off in 1920, the first year Syracuse fielded a varsity team. The Orange won that encounter 2-0 and began the series by going 7-0-2 in the first nine meetings. Colgate turned the tables in the 1950s, '60s and '70s and the rivalry has been competitive ever since with the Orange holding a 3-2-2 lead in the seven meetings since 2001. Overall, the Raiders lead the series, 28-13-10. Colgate won last year's pairing 3-2 in overtime at Van Doren Field.
