SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team secured a win in its first road game of the season. The Orange defeated Union, 3-1, at Messa Rink on Friday. SU got a slow start in the scoring column, but dominated the majority of the game, outshooting the Dutchwomen 27-13, including an 18-1 advantage in the second period.
Junior Lisa Mullan put Syracuse on the board first after 28:26 of scoreless play. Freshman Christina LaCombe passed the puck to sophomore Isabel Menard who found Mullan for the goal. SU rookie Margot Scharfe found the back of the net just three minutes into the third period, which proved to be the game-winning goal. Scharfe has scored goals in back-to-back games for the Orange. Fellow freshman Sadie St. Germain recorded her fourth assist of the season on Scharfe's score.
Union's Lauren Cromartle scored the only goal for the Dutchwomen after being blanked for nearly 58 minutes of play. Junior Megan Skelly scored an open-net goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to seal the win for the Orange. Menard earned her second assist on the score along with senior Stefanie Marty.
Junior goaltender Stephanie Jones turned away 12 shots to earn the win in the first start of her career.
“Jones played well for us in goal,” said head coach Paul Flanagan.
“I give Union credit, they made us earn it. It was a hard fought contest and our defense buckled down and played solid down the stretch.”
The Orange will square off against Union again tomorrow (Oct. 23) at 3 p.m. at Messa Rink.
