SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater recorded the first shutout of her career as the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team held Union scoreless through 60 minutes of non-conference action. Senior Ashley Cockell fired two goals past Dutchwomen goalie Kate Gallagher to lead the Orange.
In the second game of the Syracuse-Union series, SU dominated the ice one again, outshooting the Dutchwomen 32-13. The Orange went 2-for-4 on power play opportunities, while Union went 0-3. Drinkwater turned away 13 shots to secure the shutout.
“Drinkwater came up big when she was tested and kept Union off the boards,” said head coach Paul Flanagan.
“The win was a solid team effort. We generated big chances on power-play opportunities and all lines contributed.”
SU got four of its five goals from its seniors. Senior Stefanie Marty put the Orange on the board first just over 10 minutes into the game on an assist from Megan Skelly and Isabel Menard. Veteran Julie Rising converted on a power-play to give SU a 2-0 lead after the first period. Menard recorded her second assist of the day on Rising's goal. Cockell put the game out of reach for the Dutchwomen with her two goals in the second. Menard tallied her fifth helper of the weekend on Cockell's first power-play goal and Holly Carrie-Mattimoe assisted on the other. Sophomore Kelsey Welch notched the final score of the contest on assists from Marty and Rising.
The Orange will spend another weekend away from home when it makes the trip to Columbus, Ohio to play a two-game matchup with Ohio State next weekend. The puck will first drop on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. and the two teams will meet again the following day (Oct. 30) at 4 p.m.
