VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Orange turned in a strong showing at its second meet of the season, squaring off against BIG EAST foe Villanova and LaSalle at the Villanova Swim Center in a non-scoring competition. Senior Kuba Kotynia led the men for the second consecutive meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, while senior Stephanie Lefebvre-Kuczynski and junior Chelsea Bryan set the pace for the women.
Kotynia earned his second medal in the 200-yard breaststroke this season, touching the wall at 2:07.30, while placing second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.93. Sophomore Chad Flanick joined Kotynia in the 200-yard breast with a mark of 2:31.44, good for eighth place while leading the men in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.15. Sophomore Brian Molloy and rookie Kevin Cardoni also featured in the 50 free, placing seventh (25.45) and eighth (26.11), respectively. Molloy and Cardoni also represented the Orange in the 100-yard freestyle, placing eighth (56.68) and ninth (1:00.90), respectively.
Senior Brian Zimmerman rounded out the men's competitors, placing fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.02) and swimming a time of 1:54.94 in the 200-yard freestyle, good for an eighth-place finish. The men's squad also featured in its first relay of the season, placing fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:45.13.
In women's competition, Lefebvre-Kuczynski led the squad with a silver-medal finish (2:34.10) in the 200-yard breaststroke, while placing seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 26.71. Classmate Alice Stejskal joined Lefebvre-Kuczynski in the 200-breast, swimming a time of 2:48.63 while also finishing eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.38).
Bryan was another strong contender for the Orange, notching a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (25.72) and the 100-yard edition of the event (58.31). Sophomore Alexandria Knapp and Elizabeth Cahill also swam both events. Knapp finished with a time of 27.96 in the 50 free and a mark of 1:03.14 in the 100 free, while Cahill swam times of 29.85 and 1:05.48.
Rookie Marykate McBride and sophomore Kathryn Roberts rounded out the women's swimmers, both competing in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. McBride earned a sixth-place finish in the 200 free (2:11.93), while placing seventh in the 100 free (59.80), and Roberts earned seventh (2:22.26) and ninth-places (1:05.08), respectively.
The squad also competed in its first relay of the season, earning the bronze in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:08.51.
Syracuse will take a short break before returning to the pool for a three-day competition at the NIKE Cup Invitational beginning Nov. 18 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
