CINCINNATI, Ohio - The rv/rv Orange (5-2, 2-1) travels to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats (3-4, 1-1) Saturday, October 30 (12 p.m., ESPNU). Fans can listen to the game on Syracuse ISP Sports Network (TK-99.5 FM in Syracuse) and Orange All Access. Syracuse – Cincinnati Series
The Bearcats lead the all-time series 6-4 with Cincinnati winning the past five contests. Syracuse won the first three games in 1993, 1994 and 1998, and has a record of 1-5 starting in 2004 when the teams began to play one another annually. The Orange victory in 2004 marked the 100th win in the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse Receives National Poll Votes
The Orange received eight votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and three votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll after its upset victory at #20/19 West Virginia. The last time Syracuse was in the top 25 was at the end of the 2001 season when it was ranked 14th in both polls. The team finished the season 10-3 and with a 26-3 victory against Kansas State in the Insight.com Bowl.
Syracuse football has not earned votes in the national polls since 2004 after it beat #17/19 Boston College. The Orange received 11 votes in the AP Top 25 Poll and one vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Road Wins
The Orange has won three road games this season at Akron, South Florida and West Virginia. The last time Syracuse football won three road games was in 2001 (at Rutgers, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech). The Orange last won four road games in 1997, and last won four away games at the opponents' stadium was in 1996.
Orange Defense Ranks Nationally
SU defense is ranked 16th nationally while performing at its best level since 1997 allowing 301.6 yards per game. The Orange is tied for 18th nationally in first downs defense and 19th in pass defense with 16.04 and 180.1 respectively. Defensive coordinator Scott Shafer has proven to be the special touch the defense needs to work at a high caliber.
Defense Makes Moves
Syracuse defense has forced at lease two turnovers in four of seven games this season. At West Virginia alone, the Orange had three interceptions, two of which caught by Doug Hogue. During the Doug Marrone era, the team has forced 13 interceptions and 15 fumble recoveries for a total of 28 turnovers.
Eight defenders are averaging at least four tackles per game, each forcing at least one turnover. Linebacker Derrell Smith leads the defense with an average of 8.4 tackles per game. Freshman linebacker Marquis Spruill leads the team with 5.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups.
National and BIG EAST Player of the Week Honors
Senior linebacker Dough Hogue garnered the title of Defensive Player of the Week from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and BIG EAST Conference for his performance against West Virginia. Hogue has a team-high 10 tackles, including eight solo stops, 1.5 for a loss of 12 yards, two interceptions and one pass breakup. With the defense, he held WVU scoreless for the final three quarters of the game. This national honor is his second, the first awarded for his performance versus Rutgers in 2009.
Schwartzwalder Trophy
For the first time since 2001, Syracuse brought home the Schwartzwalder Trophy with a win at West Virginia 19-14. SU and WVU battle for the coveted Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy, which has gone to the winner of the annual faceoff since 1993. The trophy is named for the Hall of Fame coach who led the Orange to its sole national football championship in 1959. He started at center for West Virginia before graduating in 1933.
