SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (2-5-4, 0-1-2) registered its second draw in three BIG EAST Conference games with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against DePaul (3-6-3, 0-2-1) on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match was Syracuse's seventh extra-session contest in 11 outings this season.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo recorded three saves against the Blue Demons to earn his second shutout of 2010 and the 20th clean sheet of his career.
The Orange was the more dangerous team throughout the match and outshot the Blue Demons, 22-15, including an 11-5 margin in the first half. That consistent offensive pressure resulted in some quality chances for Syracuse to score the winner.
In early minutes of the second half, junior Federico Agreda drilled a volley from six yards out into the stomach of DePaul keeper John Michael Kulnig.
Syracuse created another golden scoring opportunity in the 84th minute. Freshman Brett Jankouskas played the ball into the box from out wide. Sophomore Mark Brode found himself alone in front of the Blue Demon goal, but his volley of the Jankouskas service sailed high and the score remained deadlocked at zero.
The match progressed to overtime where the Orange outshot the Blue Demons, 3-1, in the first extra period. Then in the second extra session, Syracuse thought it had finally scored the winner when Jankouskas knocked the ball past Kulnig and into the net in the 108th minute. However, Jankouskas was called for offsides. The goal was taken off the board and the match ultimately ended in a draw.
Junior Nick Roydhouse paced the Orange offense with six shots, two of which were on goal.
Antonio Aguilar led the Blue Demons with five shots. Kulnig played all 110 minutes between the posts for DePaul and recorded six saves.
Syracuse is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 when it begins a three-game road trip against St. John's. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium.
Match Notes: Saturday's game was the second 0-0 stalemate of the season for the Orange … It also played Pittsburgh to a scoreless draw on Sept. 25 … The Orange has never lost to DePaul on its home field … SU is 2-0-1 against the Blue Demons at the SU Soccer Stadium …Syracuse's seven overtime games this season is the most since 2003 when the Orange also had seven extra-session encounters.
